Preferred Supplier for Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance

FT Pipeline Systems has successfully been engaged as the preferred steel pipeline supplier for one of the largest infrastructure projects in the UK for a generation.

Anglian Water’s Strategic Pipeline Alliance (SPA) project comprises Farrans, Mott MacDonald Bentley, Costain and Jacobs and will future-proof water supplies in one of the driest areas of the country, by moving water from areas of surplus to areas of deficit against the backdrop of an increasing population and various environmental challenges. The scheme is due to be completed in 2025 by which time, the new supply network will be almost 500km in length.

The project will see tens of kilometres of new, large-scale pipelines being laid in the region, a significant portion of which are being supplied by FTPS. The first 6km of pipes recently arrived by vessel into Immingham docks and, following discharge and inspection by FTPS’ experienced handlers, were re-loaded to truck for the final leg of their journey. The choice of east coast port of entry was critical to minimising the carbon footprint and road traffic impact. Further details about the project can be found on the UK Water Projects page.

In 2023 FTPS’ team will deliver a further 80+km of large diameter Ejoint/socket steel watermains to the region along with over 1,600 fittings, the majority produced by Ejoint/socket specialist Lortub. For every welded joint welded by subcontractor Sermimax, a Canusa K60/L adhesive lined-heat shrink sleeve will be applied, with several thousand sleeves required in total.

FTPS is also involved with the pipe in pipe solutions on the project – where the trunk mains are being inserted in tunnels under other infrastructure – providing both insulation and safe passage for the tubes during the installation phase.

Prior to the first delivery, FTPS’ Project Director, Ian Harding, visited the mill production plant in Duzce, Turkey. The mill, Erciyas, holds the required DWI 31.4.a approval for the UK market and has been FTPS’ partner for the last 12 years.

The mill visit involved key members from the SPA alliance including Ray Butler from AWS’s Water Quality Team, David Joseph, Material Scientist for AWS and Craig Fisher, Project Director from J N Bentley, with an in-depth audit into the provided Quality, Test and Inspection plan.
